Lester was born June 10, 1925 in Sioux Falls to August and Florence Wallenberg. Lester grew up in Sioux Falls and attended Franklin Elementary and Whittier Junior High. He graduated from Washington High School in 1943. He married Deloris Halverson March 27, 1948. They farmed in Artesian, SD for a short time and then returned to Sioux Falls where he worked at John Morrell as an electrician until his retirement.

Lester was very active in his neighborhood and was known as the Mayor of Riverside. His dedication brought many improvements to the neighborhood, including the childrens pool at Pioneer Park. He also volunteered for 16 years for city urban renewal projects and was involved in many political campaigns for city offices. He had a passion for hunting and hunted pheasants every year near Artesian, along with yearly hunting trips to the Black Hills for deer and elk. He was able to experience a trip of a lifetime to Alberta, Canada to hunt bear and Rocky Mountain sheep. A hobby of raising canaries grew into a business with his friend, Norman Kopecky. They called their business Living Designs and installed many bird aviaries throughout Sioux Falls including the post office, nursing homes and libraries. He retired from raising birds as Norm continued with the business and the company has become well known throughout the country. Until last week, he had coffee every Wednesday with his brother-in-law, Ron Murray and his best friends, Norm Kopecky and Louis Flynn.

Less greatest joy was his family. His life centered on his wife, daughters and grandchildren. All of them will miss his advice, generosity and sense of humor. He is survived by his 2 daughters, Denise (Duane) Kruse, Deb Wallenberg (Jim Understock), Custer,SD ; 8 grandchildren: Adam Kruse of Minneapolis MN; Audrey Pickerill (Nathan) of Lincoln, NE; Carly Kruse of London, England; Tyler and Max Kruse of Sioux Falls; Molly Kruse of Storm Lake, IA; Jamie (Mike) Striplin of Arvada, Co; and Cad (Laura) Waite of Denver, CO; and 3 great grandchildren: Riley and Cian Waite and Kennady Pickerill. .He is also survived by his sisters, Marge Murray (Ron), Phyllis Thompson and a brother, August (Wally) Wallenberg.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Deloris, his parents and two brothers, Robert and Wayne Wallenberg.
