Mary Theresa Honrath, daughter of John and Louise (Schoeberl) Honrath, was born August 3, 1911 in Salem, SD. She was raised on a farm with three brothers and three sisters.
Mary met her husband, Ed Lacey, while living and working in Sioux Falls. They were united in marriage on July 10, 1940 on a day when the temperature was 101 degrees in the shade. They lived in Sioux Falls until the city caught up with the farmland, after which they moved to Trent, SD.
Mary kept busy with eight children, a huge garden, and being active in community organizations. She belonged to an extension club for over 50 years. Mary enjoyed her time in Garden Club, beautifying the hospital grounds, Dells Park, and the nursing homes with plants and flowers. Mary was a member of the Dell Rapids Catholic Daughters of the Americas for over 25 years. She was a member of St. Therese Catholic Church and was a former member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dell Rapids and St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Sioux Falls. She also acted as County Committee Chairman for the Republican Party. As a senior, Mary learned oil and watercolor painting. She often competed in the Moody County Fair by entering her garden produce, flowers, and paintings.
Mary’s beloved husband of 58 years, Ed, passed away on February 22, 1998.
Mary loved her Catholic faith, her family, and her friends. She always welcomed people into her home and wanted to make sure they had a meal before they went on their way. Her life was about helping others. Mary always spoke from the heart and reached out to those in need with compassion and kindness.
We celebrate her life as we mourn her absence in our lives. We are grateful for all of the ways she blessed us with her wisdom, her faith, and her compassion. All those who knew her were touched by her kindness and generosity. She was truly a great woman. We will forever remember her warm smile and her loving touch.
Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Jim Lacey and his wife, Joan, Trent, SD, Barbara Schmidt and her husband, Harlan, Spearfish, SD, Christina Smelker and her husband, Doyle, Stratton, CO, Louise Lacey Fines, Minnetonka, MN, Lois Brown and her husband, Kelly, Sioux Falls, SD, Mike Lacey and his wife, Lois, Trent, SD, Ted Lacey and his wife, Bev, Trent, SD; her nephew, Dr. Dan MacRandall and his wife, Sue, Sioux Falls, SD; 31 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Rita Flanery, Sioux Falls, SD; and a host of other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husband, Mary was preceded in death by a son, Peter, in 1974, and an infant son, David, in 1942; a granddaughter, Jennifer Smelker Wells, in 2005; her parents; three brothers, Joseph, Leo, and Francis; and two sisters, Florence Siemonsma and Virginia “Jean” Kerkvliet.
