Carolyn Faye Rud, daughter of Anton and Mavis (Liebsch) Rud, was born March 12, 1943, in Volga, SD. She grew up in Volga and received her education there. She graduated from Volga High School in 1961. Carolyn married Richard Ellsworth on December 31, 1962, in Pipestone, MN. The couple then moved to Tripp, SD where they lived for three years before moving to Yankton, SD for a brief time. They moved back to Tripp where she worked as an assistant to the Superintendent of the School. The family then moved to Lennox, SD where they lived for seven years before moving to Brandon and eventually Sioux Falls.

While in Sioux Falls, she worked for the John Morrell Company in the orders department before taking a job as the records clerk for the Sioux Falls Police Department in 1984. She retired from the police department in 1997.

In her free time, Carolyn enjoyed golfing with family and friends, riding her bike, taking care of her garden, playing tennis and her dog, Trouble. Above all, she loved to spend time with her family. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend who will be greatly missed by all those who shared her life.

Grateful for having shared her life are her daughter, Nachole (Steve) Gillis; grandchildren, Jordan Gillis and his fiancé, Sara Eiesland, Austen and Lacy Gillis; great-granddaughter, Harper Gillis; brother, Paul (Judy) Rud; sister, Sharon (Dwaine) Brunken, all of Sioux Falls; brother, George Rud, Volga, SD; and life partner, Stephen Laughlin, Sioux Falls.

Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents, Anton and Mavis; husband, Richard; brother, David and sister, Rosella.

Carolyn’s family requests that memorials be directed to the American Leukemia Society.
